What is Mathematics and what is Computer Science?
There are two types of mathematics - theoretical mathematics and applied mathematics. Theoretical mathematics focuses on creating new mathematical theories or finding new ways to relate mathematical principles. Applied mathematics can be used to solve problems in business, industry, government, engineering, and the natural and social sciences. If you've always been interested in the science of numbers and statistics, then this is the major for you.
Computer science is the study of the application of computers to people's lives. Computer science is an interdisciplinary field with roots in mathematics and engineering with applications in many other areas like business, science, and art. Major in computer science if you like learning about how computers work and how computers are integrated into our everyday lives.
The Mathematics and Computer Science Department offers both a bachelor's of arts degree as well as a bachelor's of science degree in either mathematics or computer science. The Department also offers a minor in mathematics and in computer science.
The Department of Mathematichs and Computer Science offers the following undergraduate programs:
Our Mission
The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science at Gallaudet University is committed to providing in each of its programs a supportive, nurturing environment in which Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing students may learn to appreciate the power, beauty, and utility of mathematics and computer science in the context of a Liberal Arts education. Our courses, service and major alike, prepare the student to effectively use and communicate mathematics in a wide variety of situations, and to apply this knowledge to other fields. Our major programs prepare students to apply and communicate scientific reasoning at a high level in both theoretical and applied settings, providing themselves with a wide degree of flexibility in choosing their career paths.
